A simple question...with surprisingly honest answers

We asked this at the recent Northern Marketing Festival taking place in Liverpool, Leeds and Manchester.  Some people laughed, some gave it a deep, thoughtful pause, pen in hand. It was as if it was the first time they’d been asked something that truly mattered.

We only meant it to be a fun icebreaker. But the answers? Ranged from hilarious to deeply revealing, painting an interesting picture of a marketer's daily life.  And it turns out, many of these wishes fell into distinct categories.

“Get a notification a week before a trend drops.”
“Be able to speak trends before they’re trends.”

The Mind-Readers

“Read the audience’s mind to know what would work.”
“To know what my customers want.”
“To give people what they want, how they want it, when they want it.”

The Wise-Spenders

“Unlimited marketing budget & resources.”
“Fun ( like entertainment.... ) budget.”
“People saw my campaign without putting any ad budget.”

The Data Dreamers

“Sort attribution & trust GA4.”
“Collect all the data—but with transparency and consent.”

The Philosophers

“Speak your truth.”
“Positivity, passion, patience.”
“Going viral without a strategy.”

Why this matters

Yes, it was a fun activation. But standing back and seeing these answers emerge, a profound truth hit us: marketers have stories. Opinions. War wounds. Those little truths we rarely say out loud - the ones born from late nights, tough feedback, and moment of quiet triumph - but instantly relate to when someone else shares them.

Because marketing comes with constant pressure and proving ROI, it’s not just about knowing you’re not alone. It’s about asking for help and finding partners, mentors, and allies who truly get it.  That honesty doesn’t just feel good—it leads to better work and stronger partnerships.
